3. Lost and Found
I have a number of interesting items. I will post a

it is negative which is important for making our event
better each year). Fire it to normont@islandnet.com
5. Pictures
I have a number of images up on our Frontrunners

Just over 2 days to go! :: June
16, 2005
We are still in need of volunteers. Help us out!! We
like a smooth race and that means lots of volunteers!
If you can help out on race day please contact Alison
Keple.
the 1st Annual Triathlon Night at Frontrunners Victoria
Friday June 17th 5:30pm-8pm 15% off all product Wetsuit
give-away & Draw prizes. Suppliers on hand to answer
questions.
Just in case you were not sure we have qualifying spots
for BOTH 2005 AND
2006 World Age Group Long course championships. Originally
we only had 2006 but we got ITU to extend their deadline
so we could also have 2005
schedule changes
go to the schedule page and view the schedule for race
day... there have been some updates! In case you have
forgotten on June 18th registration is from 12:00 to
5:00. Mandatory pre race meeting is at 4:00. Mandatory
means that you have to be there!!

Just over 2 weeks to go! :: June
6, 2005
We are working hard (as normal for this time before
the event) to make sure that everything is dialed in
for the race. We still need volunteers so please check
notice above. The registration page is up-to-date as
of June 2, 2005. We most likely will not be changing
this list again before the event. Please look over it
and let us know if there are any problems. Sorry but
we have had to enforce the "No Refunds" as
stated on the entry form as of the end of May. We are
planning for you to show up even if you don't at this
point.
Travel
Every year people get stuck on the mainland because
they do not plan their trip out. The best way to enjoy
a trip to the island with less stress at the Ferries
is to reserve a spot OR walk on. If you are reserving
a ferry for race day please make it for the 6 or 7 sailing.
If you make it for the 5pm sailing you will be tight
on time after the awards IF you qualify for IMC or World
Long Course Champs. You can make the 5 sailing (if reserved)
and stay for the awards with not too much trouble but
it could still be a pinch.
BEST TRAVEL PLANS are to stay over on Sunday night and
join us at the Howard Johnston Hotel on Sunday night
for a few drinks and stories about the day!
Wait List
I can not anticipate any teams getting in off the wait
list. Usually if there is a problem in a team then the
team member is replaced.
Individuals.
You must attend the pre-race meeting at 4:00 on Saturday
the 18th at Hampsterly Park. We will let people in off
the wait list at 5:00 or there abouts. CASH ONLY--NO
Cheques or Credit Cards. I anticipate that everyone
on the individual wait list has a really good chance
of getting in the event if they show up at registration.
I repeat: CASH ONLY.
Any other news we will post up here before the event.
Have a great last weekend of training and we will see
you on the 18th.
The Crew.

on August 6th and 7th, 2005.
Registration

Refunds &
Wait Lists :: May 10, 2005
As it states on the Entry Form each year; "Sorry,
Absolutely no Refunds". This is pretty well standard
at any major event to cut down on administrative and
planning problems. However we do have a number of people
on our wait list AND we are trying to raise money for
a very important cause so we will combine the two. Until
May 20th if an individual or team needs or wants to
drop out of this year's event we will refund all but
$40 of their money. $15 will go to the Smart Foundation.
This will have to be confirmed by an e-mail from the
participant that wants to drop out. After May 20th we
will assume that everyone on the list is showing up.
Thanks and I hope your training is going well.
The Crew.

LIST AND TEAM ENTRIES STILL BEING ACCEPTED ::
April 20, 2005
We have just posted the first list for the Half Iron

THIS LIST. This is primarily on-line entries and those
that got their entries in really early and paid by
cheque (IF your cheque bounces....so does your entry
unfortunately). We will try to update the list by about
100 people per day and hopefully have a complete list by
the end of the week. With regards to wait list and relay
information please stay tuned here and we will post
information as we have it.
Thanks.

2005 RACE IS FULL :: April 19, 2005
Hello Half Iron'ers! With terrible timing I have
been away for the past week down supporting Wendy Simms
at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey. The staff at
Frontrunners Nanaimo, Justin the web guy and John
Litherland the on-line registration person have been
talking each day to monitor how full the event is.
Apparently it has filled up quickly! I will take a look
at everything and post an update tonight or tomorrow
with exactly where we are at and if there is any room
left on the individual, wait list or relay. As always
the only way to get your name on the wait list will be
to send in your application.
I will also begin posting confirmations today on the web
page. Keep in mind that entries with Cheque payment are
confirmed much quicker that credit card ones.
It looks like the cut off date for entry was last
Friday, April 15th but I will confirm that with
Frontrunners later on today.
Will keep you all posted as fast as we can. Thanks and
sorry for the unfortunate delay.
Sincerely,
Normon Thibault
HOW WE
RECIEVE ENTRIES:: April 8, 2005
The NewBalance Half Iron is a FAIR race. You can courier
your entry or you can just mail it....it will make no
difference as we go by POST MARK DATE so that it is fair
for everyone. That is how we have done it for the past 9
years and it will be the same this year. We expect the
on line registration to start Monday (the link will show
up on our registration page) and you can choose to
register that way but again.....it will be compared to
post marks so even if you register on line you will be
treated the same as everyone else. Again trying to be as
fair as possible.
Note: We have received approval from one of three
municipalities so far to increase our regular
registration numbers based on our Canadian Championship
status. If it is approved by the other two
municipalities we will be increasing our limit to 550
from 500. SO until we get the other two approvals we
will have a longer wait list this year once the first
500 people fill up.
Sincerely,
Normon Thibault
WHERE ARE
THOSE ENTRY FORMS?!!! :: March 31, 2005
Smells like Tri Flow. The air is crisp. Triathletes are
cruising in the aero position and the question on
everyone's mind is the usual one for March; "When will
the entries for the New Balance Half Iron be out?" With
all good intentions we thought we would have them out
sooner BUT we were waiting for sponsor confirmations,
logos, design work and then we got into a
fight up here in Nanaimo which was taking up a lot
of my "spare (training)" time.
Prior participants:
The entries are at the printers. They should be dry by
Thursday or Friday. Either way we will have them into
the mail for all the past participants and those who
have requested them (up to this point) on Friday. Over
the weekend they will make their way through the
mysterious postal system and some will start to get them
on Monday, some Tuesday and our US people probably
Wednesday.
Everyone
Else:
Next Friday (the 8th) we will post an on line entry that
you can print off and mail back in and we "should" have
an on-line registration option open up shortly there
after.
"Smart Entry"
There is a "Smart Entry" option for this year's race.
This entry is a tribute to Dave Smart, to whom the race
is dedicated, a close friend of many of the people who
work on the race. Dave passed away last September
leaving behind a wife and new born daughter. Form more
information, go to the "registration" page on this site.
Sincerely,
Normon Thibault

CANADIAN
LONG COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS
:: Jan 9, 2005 The race
date for the 10th annual New Balance Half Iron is set
for June 19, 2005. The 2005 event is the Canadian Long
Course Championships.
We will most likely have
25 spots for the 2005 IMC but this hasn't been confirmed
with IM North America.
The 2005 event will be
dedicated to our friend Dave Smart who passed away on
September 26th from cancer. His first child was born
only 3 weeks earlier and he fought hard to hold on until
she was born. He was a competitor at the Half Iron in
1996, 1997, 1998 and 2000. Dave was a wonderful person
as well as a great friend to many people. He always made
us laugh. We will miss him and we dedicate the Half Iron
to him and to raising money for Cancer research. It
touches all of us.
Registration We are
considering on-line registration but have yet to make a
firm cost/benefit decision. Please note that
registration for this event is NOT open early like other
events in BC or Alberta. Last year registration opened
in March and we expect to have it open no earlier than
late February and no later than the end of March for the
2005 event. Entries are sent out to past participants
and posted on the web site when they become available.
This event usually fills up 2.5 weeks after the entries
are released. There is no special way to get into the
event you just have to send in your form once you
receive it.
Sincerely,
Normon Thibault
DAVE SMART
FOUNDATION :: Jan 9, 2005
This year we are pleased to be associated with the
Dave Smart Foundation. Dave was an avid Victoria
triathlete who tragically passed away from melanoma two
weeks after the birth of his daughter in late 2004. He
raced our event in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2000 and was
our "web-guy". Dave, we miss you! We will be dedicating
our race to Dave and helping to raise money for melanoma
research. We will be auctioning a deluxe entry
package -
place your bid here!, with all proceeds going to
the
Dave Smart Foundation. Help us kick off some serious
fundraising for the foundation while you "Live smart and
race smart"! The
highest bidder will receive:

parking
- reserved bike
spot in transition
- Dave Smart's
